August 18-August 22
Birds_Logo_Web.jpgThe Birds, written about 2,400 years ago, is
Aristophanes’ hilarious tale of two Athenians who, revolted by the
politics, poetry, religion and business of their hometown, set out to
a high land where the birds dwell. They persuade the birds to set up
their own kingdom, fight the gods, and establish their own supremacy on
earth. This contemporary version, adapted by Walter Kerr, captures what
must surely be the spirit of the original production way back when. And,
with its commentary on society, it also lets you know that this is
"Theater" with a capital "T." Using vaudeville styles, broken "fourth
walls," and physical comedy, this is an experience that will not only
delight students with fun aspects of theater, but also engage them in
the hidden politics of a classic and very, very funny play.Click here for tickets!

The ArtsWest Theater Conservatory is an intensive summer program where students aged 12-16 learn and improve their skills in theater, dance, and music while rehearsing a full production.

This year ArtsWest will present the comedy The Birds by Aristophanes. Full of physical and verbal comedy this play will give students a chance to explore the ancient Greek tradition of comedy and theater while learning skills that will benefit them in today’s society. Students learn theater skills as well as research history, politics, and art history based on National and Washington State standards. Daily classes in acting, text, movement, and script analysis taught by professional teaching artists and rehearsals of a classic play lead by an experienced artistic team, instill confidence, poise and communication skills for everyday life.
