Wine and Cheese Artist Reception: Thursday, December 11th from 6-7:30pm

The bustle of the holidays often gives little time to slow down and take the meandering path to enjoy the beauty that surrounds us.  ArtsWest presents a great reason to take that moment to relax this holiday season with Circuitous Surfaces including Todd Bernave, Britt Chauncey Freda, Jane McGehee and Janet Miller beginning November 23, 2008 through January 4, 2009. 

Bernave’s work is a marvelous example of contemporary mixed media at its finest.  He seamlessly blends a diverse mix of metals such as copper, aluminum and brass with acrylic paint, epoxy, resin, plaster and photographs. The works’ technical complexity is a great example of the ability of an artist to share their own awareness of the many layers of beauty that are found below the surface of things. 

Cornish College of the Arts alumna, McGehee, paints subtle layers of gouache and ink on board and paper in her new works from a series entitled 'Rain Cloud.’  Created during a 2008 residency in southern France, these colorful clouds bleed between layers that epitomize the surreal atmosphere and never ending horizons found in that region. 

Freda believes that the cracks in life are stuffed with surprise and the simplest of things, sometimes even chickens.  Our domesticated feathered friends have never been so captivating with her unique approach to painting using acrylics!  Everyone will appreciate the elaborate textures and contemporary style of these precious gems. 

Miller’s fanciful encaustic works reminisce of songbirds in the morning sun and pleasant memories of travels to distant lands, both real and imagined.  Beneath her layers of wax and acrylic paint, one finds used maps, old books, letters, doodles and musical scores among other things.  Each unique collaged work is a harmonization of space, color and line.
